Your soft skills inventory

The annual review is a waste. It’s not particularly useful for employee or boss, it’s stressful and it doesn’t happen often enough to make much of an impact.

If you choose to, though, you can do your own review. Weekly or monthly, you can sit down with yourself (or, more powerfully, with a small circle of peers) and review how you’re shifting your posture to make more of an impact.

Some of the things to ask:

What am I better at?

Have I asked a difficult question lately?

Do people trust me more than they did?

Am I hiding more (or less) than I did the last time I checked?

Is my list of insightful, useful and frightening stats about my work, my budgets and my challenges complete? And have I shared it with someone I trust?

If selling ideas is a skill, am I more skilled at it than I was?

Who have I developed?

Have I had any significant failures (learning opportunities) lately, and what have I learned?

What predictions have I made that have come to pass? Am I better at seeing what’s going to happen next?

Who have I helped? Especially when there was no upside for me…

Am I more likely to be leading or following?

The Rise of The Sovereign Individual…

how to prepare for a presentation

The ongoing transformation is both good news and bad.

The good news is that the Information Revolution will liberate individuals as never before. For the first time, those who can educate and motivate themselves will be almost entirely free to invent their own work and realize the full benefits of their own productivity.

Genius are being unleashed, free from both the oppression of government and the drags of racial and ethnic prejudice.

In this information society,no one who is truly able will be detained by the ill-formed opinions of others.

It does not matter what most of people on earth might think of your race, your looks, your age, your sexual proclivities or the way you wear your hair.In the cyber-economy,they will never see you.The ugly, the fat,the old,the disabled will vie with the young and beautiful on equal terms in utterly color-blind anonymity on the new frontiers of cyberspace.

Go for it…

Are you an insider…?

Business leaders are finally realizing that their most powerful assets are not their buildings, bank accounts, or even their technologies.
It’s their relationships with their audiences.
Relationships are about intention and attitude; shared interests, experimentation and growth.

But conventional wisdom resists attempts to develop a business concept, a “brand,” around an attitude.
“We need a defensible position. We need to own a space in the customer

Motivation Tips

Same waves,same beach(s), different day.

The risk of skin cancer. The falling. Sand in your socks. The people hassling you for your spot on the wave. The pressure to do more sets. The other guys at the beach who don’t appreciate your style. The drudgery of doing it again tomorrow, when the weather sucks. And then every day, from now on, never ceasing.

Where would you go on vacation?

Your drudgery is another person’s delight. It’s only a job if you treat it that way. The privilege to do our work, to be in control of the promises we make and the things we build, is something worth cherishing.

Go for it everyday..!

Cashing the check …

A check in your wallet does you very little good. It represents opportunity, sure, but not action.

Most of us are carrying around a check, an opportunity to make an impact, to do the work we’re capable of, to ship the art that would make a difference.

No, the world isn’t fair, and most people don’t get all the chances they deserve. There are barriers due to income, to race, to social standing and to education, and they are inexcusable and must fall. But the check remains, now more than ever. The opportunity to step up and to fail (and then to fail again, and to fail again) and to continue failing until we succeed is greater now than it has ever been.

As Martin Luther King Junior spoke about a half a lifetime ago,

“We are now faced with the fact, my friends, that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time. Life often leaves us standing bare, naked, and dejected with a lost opportunity. The tide in the affairs of men does not remain at flood — it ebbs. We may cry out desperately for time to pause in her passage, but time is adamant to every plea and rushes on. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words, “Too late.”

The opportunities to start and try new directions or ventures are now Immense..Grab yourself (and your people) by the collar, yank yourself off of your comfortable, well-worn path and create something distinctive, meaningful, and emotional.

Good luck..

Exploit Learning Together…

dolphins training and consultants articlesMeetup,Toastmasters, AA, book groups, workshops, team building events, midnight basketball, community college, jazz bands, …

There’s a pattern here.

We learn best when we learn together.

It’s not merely the logistic efficiency of putting people together in a room. Now that the internet replaces that efficiency, we see that ‘more for less’ is the least of it. Learning together serves a crucial function… it makes learning happen.

The dropout rate of massive online courses is higher than 97%. It’s easy to be exposed to education, but actually quite a challenge to learn. Access to education isn’t sufficient… something else is going on.Maybe group dynamics, art of belonging and fun.

I think it’s important for many of us to step up and lead and organize and teach.

Be the one…

What happened to the dreams..?

dolphins group free articles

Jack was a typical teenager. Overweight. Insecure.
A bit soft and naive.
Then one day, he had a dream.
One in which he felt energetic, powerful, self-assured.
That dream stirred Jake.
It created a hunger that demanded to be fed.
So he started going to the gym.
He ran on the treadmill. He lifted weights.
His mind was on fire with visions of change, of success.
He read everything he could get his hands on, sought out role models and asked for help.
He worked hard, really really hard.
He tried new exercises. Modified his routines and his diet.
And slowly, but surely, it worked.
Jake’s desire and discipline transformed him.
His dream became his reality.
Then one day, Jake forgot how to dream.
When he looked at the weights he saw the reality of pain, not the instruments of possibility.
He became bored and comfortable.
He wanted to relax, to cruise for a while.
So he searched out information and voices that validated his new desire.
And he found them.
Jake breathes easier now. He’s created an environment and routine that make him feel good.
And so, he’s done growing.
Jake reminds me of so many organizations.
Jake was moved by a dream, by a burning desire to create a new future.
And so he grew.
But then he became contented, tired of the hard work and tedium of the fundamentals.
So now he dabbles with new fangled approaches.
He rationalizes his feel good routines.
He talks dispassionately, like an accountant.
Jake has matured. He’s smart. He’s a realist.
And his impassioned dream is nothing but a fond and distant memory.

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote, “A single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities.” Reality is for wimps.

Looking for Something to React or Respond To…

In the old-school factory, the twin taskmasters are the manual and the assembly line.

The manual tells you what to do,and the assembly line keeps the work coming. Its not your job to decide.

When we move away from assembly and manual labor,it was easy to pretend that we were no longer working in a factory. It turns out that our work changed, but our psyches didn’t.

Now,we go looking for something to distract us.That is the culture of the internet, combined with the culture of the white-collar cubicle worker, combined with fear.

You don’t want to take initiative or responsibility,so you check your incoming mail, your twitter stream, your blog comments.Surely, there’s something to play off of,something to get angry about, some meeting to go to.I know for someone who goes to forty outside the country meetings and never seems to actually produce anything. And you can repeat this process forever.Forever.It never ends.

The alternative is to draw a map and lead.

Did you know Life is full of holes…?

how to keep going

Every scrutinized historical event fails to hold up to serious inspection.

There’s missing evidence. How did he get from point A to point B? Where’s the document or the eyewitness or the proof?

Your future opportunities are like this as well. Even at the hottest part of the 1998 Internet run up, skeptics wanted more proof that the internet wasn’t merely a waste of time. They wanted all the dots connected, and were happy to keep collecting dots until they were.

For a train to get from one city to another, it makes countless tiny leaps, crossing microscopic chasms that would easily show up if you looked closely enough. That doesn’t keep you from getting there, though.

I don’t think the right question is, “is the path perfect?”

It’s probably, “Is this somewhere I’d like to go?”

It’s significantly easier to cross a gap when you have direction and momentum.

Keep it going and good luck will find you….
