How to touch your imagined Future

Researchers have shown that thinking about how the future events will occur actually lays the foundation for such events to occur.

But your thinking about the future has to be concrete.

In one study, about the effect of thinking about the future, one group of students was asked to imagine the happiness of doing well on a test under the premise that envisioning this happy outcome would motivate students to study.

A second group was asked to imagine studying hard before a test but was not told to think about how it would feel.

Finally, a third group was told nothing (the control group).

After taking the test, the students who envisioned studying hard (the second group) actually performed the best of all group. The students who were supposed to be motivated by envisioning the joy of performing well actually performed the worst.

So, effective thinking about the future relies not on imaging a successful you or organization but on thinking about concrete steps to get you there 🙂
